The challenge
AI at scale requires centralising data - but centralising data is the problem
The dominant model for AI development depends on aggregating data in centralised compute environments. For European organisations operating under GDPR, across national jurisdictions, and on sensitive datasets - health records, critical infrastructure data, financial information - this model is often legally impermissible. Europe needed an alternative: AI at scale without data ever leaving its point of origin, running across a sovereign, multi-provider cloud-edge infrastructure rather than a single hyperscaler.
The solution
FedEU.ai and FedX - federated AI built for the European cloud-edge continuum
E-Group's IPCEI-CIS project - FedEU.ai - inverts the conventional AI paradigm. Built on FedX, E-Group's proprietary federated learning platform, it delivers 0% accuracy loss versus central training, 90% energy savings, and a proprietary protocol reducing the environmental footprint of large-scale federated ML by up to 25%. Private data, AI processing, and insight generation are fully decoupled - algorithms travel to data, or models train on encrypted data at compute. E-Group co-leads Workstream 3 (WS3) and its AI Cluster within IPCEI-CIS, which involves 19 enterprises across 7 member states and €3.5 billion in total EU funding. Lead researcher: Dr. Péter Antal. E-Group also contributed to ICRA v2.0 - the second version of the IPCEI-CIS Reference Architecture. The Ambiti8n pilot - eight partners, four countries, eleven components, built in four months - was demonstrated live at the 8ra Annual Summit in Rotterdam (March 2026) to approximately 500 European stakeholders including European Commission representatives. It ran a sleep apnea detection application federated across hospital sites in Italy and Poland: patient data never moved; only gradients did.
The result

FedEU.ai is no longer a pilot. Presented at Rotterdam to European Commission representatives and Member State delegations, it is positioned in the CISERO exploitation roadmap with ready-to-scale validation targeted by end of 2026. Within 30 days of appearing at the IPCEI Forum, E-Group's FedLab-X product attracted business interest from nearly 30 major companies. Ambiti8n is now publicly established as the flagship integration pilot of IPCEI-CIS - recognised across the programme as evidence that European federated infrastructure can reach production-readiness within the lifecycle of a strategic initiative.
