The challenge

FedX was a project-based platform. TIM needed a differentiated AI offering. The IPCEI-CIS General Assembly needed a live demonstration.

FedX had been deployed exclusively through project-based engagements - each deployment a bespoke integration, not a consumable service. TIM, building its Edge Cloud Continuum (TIM ECC) and expanding its AI and Data Analytics service catalogue, had no federated learning capability to offer customers who needed to train AI models on data that cannot be centralised. The IPCEI-CIS General Assembly created the forcing function: TIM's Task 3 obligations required a demonstrable Federated Learning as a Service capability inside TIM ECC by a defined milestone, turning a strategic gap into an urgent delivery target.

The solution

FedTIM - Federated Learning as a Service, delivered through the TIM Cloud Services catalogue on Lab8ra

E-Group and TIM established the FedTIM collaboration under the IPCEI-CIS framework. FedX is deployed onto TIM ECC's lab8ra environment using TIM ECC's own orchestration capability, then exposed through the TIM Cloud Services catalogue so customers can activate federated learning through a standard service-order workflow - the same experience as adjacent cloud services. Integration extends to TIM ECC Data Services (storage, data pipelines, ML workflow tooling) and International Data Spaces (IDS) Data Connectors. The end-to-end demonstration use case: skin-cancer image classification executed live at the IPCEI-CIS General Assembly.

The result

A new distribution channel for FedX - and a differentiated federated AI offering inside a tier-one European operator's catalogue.

The FedTIM collaboration transforms FedX from a project-by-project platform into a managed service consumable through a major European telecoms cloud. TIM gains a privacy-preserving federated AI capability that differentiates its AI and Data Analytics offering; E-Group gains a distribution channel reaching TIM's enterprise cloud customer base across Europe without per-customer integration work. The IPCEI-CIS programme gains a live demonstration of federated learning embedded in a commercial telecom cloud stack. Scenario 2 (UX and catalogue integration) and Scenarios 3–4 (data services and IDS Data Spaces) progress through Q4 2026 and beyond.
