The challenge

Deaf and hard-of-hearing people locked out of everyday communication

For deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals, routine interactions - with public services, employers, healthcare providers, or businesses - require a sign language interpreter who is rarely available on demand. SINOSZ, the National Association of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (founded 1907, member of WFD, EUD, IFHOH, and EFHOH), needed a technology platform that could connect users with qualified interpreters instantly, reliably, and securely - without dependence on physical presence or fragile consumer video tools.

The solution

Kontakt - on-premise video interpreting built on MOBIX, live since 2014

E-Group built Kontakt on MOBIX - its secure real-time communication platform, part of the Xchange product line - and has hosted and operated it in E-Group's private secure cloud since 2014. The platform provides real-time video calling with interpreters, speech-to-text for hard-of-hearing users, independent PSTN bridging enabling calls to any standard phone line, institution and partner routing with cost tracking and duty-time management, waiting queue, file transfer, push notifications, location-aware routing, and full analytics and audit logging. Technical stack: C++, Java, with Opus, Speex, G711, G729, GSM, G722, VP8, MPEG4, H.264, and H.265 codecs. GDPR-certified and independently audited.

The result

Equal access to communication - span class="heading-chapter__title-strong">in production for over a decade

Kontakt has run continuously since 2014 - over 300,000 calls, approximately 16,000 hours of conversation, 5,000+ registered users. A deaf user can connect with a qualified sign language interpreter from any supported device, making routine communication with public services, employers, and organisations accessible without advance planning. The same interaction available to a hearing person by phone is available to a deaf person through Kontakt.
